Ustad
Sultan Khan
|
| |
Ustad Sultan Khan is
one of the foremost sarangi players in India,
renowned for his extraordinary technical and
melodic control over this difficult instrument.
A master in the Indora gharana tradition,
Sultan Khan is the grandson of Ustad Azim
Khan and the son of Ustad Gulab Khan, both
celebrated in India as sarangi players and
vocalists. |

The sarangi is a multi-stringed
and sonorous bowed instrument, evoking an
exotic sound that emulates the human voice.
Sultan Khan has played to huge audiences in
India and has performed consistently over
the years in Europe and the US. While on tour
with Ravi Shankar in the 70s, he also gave
solo recitals throughout Eastern Europe. His
name is experiencing a resurgence of sorts;
he appears prominently on the recent DJ Cheb
i Sabbah release Shri Durga (Six Degrees,
distributed through Rykodisc), and has performed
most recently with Zakir Hussain, Talvin Singh,
and harmolodic jazz legend Ornette Coleman.
